Soooo, what does that look like for our family? Well, the same week that my furniture FINALLY arrived, I was telling our friends and housestaff that we were leaving. It means that we never hung pictures on the walls. It means that Dwaine resigned the same week that he traveled to meet with all of his field workers in 3 countries. It means that Connor had a good-bye party at preschool and that Erik’s first steps will likely be on U.S. soil.

It also means that we are immensely happy. Not only because we’re “coming home”, not only because we got the dream job, and not only because we’ll be close to family again…but also because we know that for the next 2 years we can load up on free refills of Diet Coke, drink water straight out of the tap, and not wear bug repellent to bed each night. No seriously, we’re kinda kidding about those last few things… kinda.

We’ll be in Washington for the next two years or so while Dwaine goes through USAID orientation & training, language training, and carries out some short overseas stints. Then, after two years, we’ll be back off to somewhere overseas. One of the hard things about this job is not knowing for sure where we’ll be sent. We know USAID is family-friendly, but we also know that we are committing ourselves to “worldwide availability”. Yes, there is a chance he can be sent to Iraq or Afghanistan, but there is an equally good chance we can end up in cushier posts like South Africa, Jamaica, or Thailand. Our life will be full of four-year “tours” after which we’ll move on to another country, and Dwaine will likely take on greater responsibilities. It is sure to be a fascinating life and we are thrilled to be taking our first step on this journey in just a couple of weeks. Keep us in your prayers as we, once again, begin a new life in a new place.
